V8 apartment

January 12, 2026

DA bureau designed a 150 m² apartment in St. Petersburg, conceived to offer comfortable, functional living for a couple with three children.

The space was designed to accommodate a wide range of functions, leading the studio to conceptually divide the apartment into two distinct areas. One part was dedicated to a spacious public zone, featuring a kitchen & living area intended for shared leisure activities, where the piano naturally found its rightful place. The second part houses the private functions, including bedrooms and bathrooms. As a result of this layout, a portion of the bay window became part of the common area, making it an ideal location for the head of the family’s workspace. When needed, this area can be visually separated from the kitchen&living room with curtains.

At the heart of the layout lies a multifunctional wooden block that both defines the space and accommodates several functions: a guest bathroom, a wardrobe and part of the kitchen. Particular attention was given to logistics: this central element allowed the studio to optimize circulation within the apartment while clearly defining a shared family space composed of a living area with a sofa, a dining zone, and the piano.

This interior  project is a vivid example of modern eclecticism. It blends the intellectual atmosphere of St. Petersburg with contemporary volumes and accents: warm wood sits alongside a stainless-steel kitchen, while clean, laconic forms coexist with vintage and contemporary art. The space is animated by numerous art objects, including a minimalist family portrait painted by the studio and vibrant small-format artworks distributed throughout the apartment. More than just a residence, the project reflects the clients’ values and character, demonstrating how architecture can shape new life scenarios for a modern family.

This renovation and addition unravels a chapter of ill-considered renovations to create an urban retreat for a young family on a remarkable site. By re-using more than half of the original structure and improving the home's environmental performance, the project also minimizes the 4000 SF home’s embodied carbon and ongoing carbon footprint. A front facade composed vertical and horizontal wood boards and slats, echoes the trellises and partitions, tying together the home’s public and private expressions and replacing an opaque street presence with a wood screen activated by shifting light from day to night.
