Phangan Beach Resort: Art hidden in a New Identity

August 10, 2026

Set along a generous stretch of beach on Koh Phangan, a tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, Phangan Beach Resort is in the midst of an ongoing transformation and rebranding, gradually shaping a new identity while remaining deeply connected to its natural surroundings.

The property unfolds horizontally rather than rising vertically, allowing its architecture and spaces to breathe with the surrounding landscape and the beachfront setting of Haad Baan Tai Beach. Rooms, villas, gardens, a swimming pool and beach areas are arranged as a relaxed sequence of spaces, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a small private world than a conventional holiday resort.

Today, Phangan Beach Resort is run by new hosts in close collaboration with their Thai team, close friends and the local landlords. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in hospitality, they approached the project with a clear vision: not simply to renovate it, but to completely rebrand it. From the signage and visual language to the interiors and overall concept. At the heart of the transformation lies something deeply personal: Art.

For the hosts, a passion for art has always been part of their lives. Their travels have taken them to unexpected places where they have discovered objects, artworks and pieces that have stayed with them, often found in the most unlikely settings. Over time, this passion became an integral part of their personal story and also the inspiration behind the design of this resort. The decision to bring this enthusiasm into Phangan Beach Resort was also a deliberate risk. Rather than creating another predictable tropical retreat, the hosts wanted to build a place with a personality of its own: one where hospitality could meet art, and where guests could experience something beyond the usual idea of an island resort.

“This is our art, and we want to share that passion throughout the resort. It’s personal, and it’s not about trying to please everyone. You may like it or you may not — that’s the nature of art.

Another important aspect of their philosophy is the desire to create genuine connections with their guests. Hospitality goes beyond simply providing a place to stay: it's about getting to know the people who visit, remembering returning guests and building relationships that can extend beyond a single stay. Creating these personal connections is an essential part of the experience they want to offer at Phangan Beach Resort.

From the moment guests arrive, the common areas reveal a playful dialogue between tropical surroundings and

a distinctly European sensibility. The resort's spaces are filled with art and unexpected details, including life-size animal sculptures that bring a touch of pop art into the landscape, while paintings add colour and personality to the interiors.

At reception, the desk is framed by wooden panels that continue along the wall, creating a flowing, wave-like effect. Soft, atmospheric lighting enhances the movement of the wood and gives the space a warm, contemporary character. Among the artworks displayed here are paintings by Vitaly Fedshi, a Russian artist based on the island, adding another layer to the resort's connection with the creative community of Koh Phangan. The design doesn't attempt to erase the rustic character often associated with island hospitality. Instead, it embraces it and reinterprets it through a carefully curated visual language.

The swimming pool, with its organic, wave-like shape, creates a relaxed gathering point, while the restaurant serves guests throughout the day, from breakfast to dinner. Beside it, the beachfront bar extends the experience towards the sea, offering another place to slow down and enjoy the setting.

Black-and-white geometric patterns appear throughout the outdoor spaces, from sun loungers and coffee tables to bar stools and chairs around the villas. Against this graphic backdrop, tropical motifs take over the textiles: from staff uniforms to table fabrics and beach bags, botanical and exotic patterns bring a sense of playfulness and reinforce the connection with the island. Touches of pink soften the graphic palette and add another layer of personality, appearing on beach towels, pool inflatables and smaller details throughout the property. One of the most memorable is the outdoor shower, whose sculptural form recalls a surfboard – an unmistakably playful reference to island life.

A special note goes to the guest toilet - a space that is often overlooked in hospitality design but here becomes an unexpected touch of Berlin-inspired nightlife. With its disco balls and dark, atmospheric mood, the room comes as a playful surprise, introducing a hint of nightlife into the tropical setting. It is a detail that perfectly captures the spirit of the hosts: the design is never afraid to surprise.

The artistic concept continues inside the rooms and villas, where the new design combines microcement with wood to create a contemporary yet warm atmosphere. The simplicity of the materials provides a calm backdrop, allowing the artwork to take centre stage. Particularly striking are a series of paintings created by the hosts themselves with the help of AI and produced through an art gallery on neighbouring Koh Samui. Bright and expressive, the works draw inspiration from flora and fauna, transforming walls into vivid focal points. Their colours inject energy into the otherwise restrained material palette, creating a dialogue between contemporary design and the organic world surrounding the resort.

In the villas, soft and rounded red armchairs introduce a bolder note, adding warmth and a sculptural quality to the interiors. Glass blocks are used in the bathrooms to visually expand the spaces while allowing natural light to filter through without compromising privacy.
